Immediate earworm.» Rolling Stone Magazine “The band that dynamites Middle Eastern psychedelic pop” Middle East Eye “A boiling mix of fuzz and darbuka, as punk as it is psychedelic” Libération AL-QASAR is an Arab rock collective with roots in France, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, and the US, which formed in 2018 in the Barbès neighborhood of Paris, France. Picking up the flame of Rachid Taha, French-US producer Thomas Attar Bellier and Moroccan front man Jaouad El Garouge (from the ancestral Gnawa tradition of Essaouira) fuse psychedelic garage rock with traditional instruments of the Arab world. Vintage Fender amps and fuzz guitars encounter the oud and the saz; Ludwig drum kits shred along the darbuka, daf, and riq. Their lyrics in classical Arabic and English deliver a frontal yet poetic attack on political and social oppression (Thomas Attar also collaborated with figures of the Arab Spring, Dina El Wedidi and Emel Mathlouthi). The collective includes electric oud hero, Mehdi Haddab, along with members of Tinariwen, Damon Albarn’s Africa Express, Rachid Taha, Robert Plant, and Salif Keita. The band toured Europe and the Middle East, with notable appearances at Trans Musicales (France) and FMM Sines (Portugal) as well as scheduled appearances for Pukkelpop 2021 (Belgium), and Lowlands 2021 (Netherlands). On the second of two Egypt tours, Al-Qasar collaborated with musicians of the zar tradition, an ancient healing ritual achieved through hypnotic drumming and mystical trance. Following the successful release of the Miraj EP in 2020 (the EP was conceived between Los Angeles, Cairo, Paris and Nashville), Al-Qasar’s first full-length album is currently in pre-production and scheduled for a 2022 release.
