7th International Workshop: Mechanisms and Modelling of Waste/Cement Interactions

The workshop “Mechanisms and Modelling of Waste/Cement Interactions” focuses on the understanding and modelling of the processes responsible for the stabilisation of hazardous and radioactive wastes in cementitious systems, and on the use of mineral wastes as cementitious (raw) materials.

Topics

The workshop aims at exchanging state-of-the-art knowledge on mineralogical, chemical and physical processes of waste/cement interactions.

  • Cement Chemistry and Microstructure: Modelling, multiscale-approaches, alternative cements
  • Cement/Rock/Soil Interfaces and Transport: Cement/host rock, transport processes, and modelling
  • Recycling of Mineral Wastes in Cement Production: Raw material replacement, supplementary cementitious materials, substitution potential, and eco-efficiency
  • Interaction of Cement with Waste Constituents: Radwaste, toxic waste, metal binding mechanisms, organic compounds
  • Nanoscale Characterisation and Molecular Dynamics: Methods at large scale facilities, advanced methods
  • Deterioration and Leaching: Alkali-aggregate reaction, carbonation, sulfate interaction, ageing processes, natural analogues

Like the very successful earlier meetings in this series of workshops (Meiringen, 2005; Le Croisic, 2008; Ghent, 2013; Murten, 2016; Karlsruhe, 2019; Prague, 2023), the 7th workshop on Mechanisms and Modelling of Waste/Cement Interactions intends to bring together world-leading and junior scientists from the different branches of the research community. We are looking forward to your participation!

The workshop fee includes coffee breaks, lunches, and the conference dinner.

About the Grimsel excursion on Thursday, 25 June (full day):

The excursion will start by a dedicated bus from Bern at 08:00 and will return approximately at 18:30. There is a possibility to hop off at Meiringen (ca. 17:00) for travel by train directly to Lucerne, or stay for an extra day in this stunning mountain region.

Additional costs: CHF190

The fee includes transportation by bus, access to the Grimsel Test Site, lunch at the Grimsel Hospiz, and a visit to the newly completed Spitallamm hydropower dam.

Please note that the excursion will only take place if a minimum of 15 participants register. Participants will be contacted by email regarding the additional payment. Thank you for your understanding.
