Challenges in Forest Research

Challenges in Forest Research

Understanding how forests respond to environmental change is challenging because it requires linking processes across multiple scales, from tree organs to entire landscapes, while bridging the gap between controlled experiments and complex real-world conditions. The ScienceDay will examine these scientific challenges and highlight how interdisciplinary collaboration, diverse methods, and new technologies can advance forest research and understanding.

we will explore what makes understanding forests and their responses to environmental change so challenging across disciplines and scales. How can we disentangle underlying processes, scale our understanding from organs and individual trees to ecosystems and landscapes, or bridge the gap between controlled experiments and the complexity of real-world conditions? Addressing these challenges increasingly requires us to cross disciplinary boundaries, bringing together different perspectives, methods and technologies. The Science Day will explore the conceptual, methodological and practical challenges we face in advancing our understanding of forests, and the opportunities that interdisciplinary approaches offer to address them.
