Re-Encountering Rachmaninoff: A Pillar of Poise and Sovereign Humanity - a Lecture by Joseph Horowitz with Film & Music - Freitag, 19. Juni 2026, 17.15 Uhr

One of the most paradoxical artistic exiles of the twentieth century was that of Sergei Rachmaninoff, who fled the Russian Revolution and wound up in New York and Los Angeles. Rachmaninoff was equally exiled in the twentieth century, a stranger to the modernism of Stravinsky and Schoenberg. His penchant for nostalgia, once equated with incriminating «sentimentality,» was actually a resilient survival strategy, bravely rejecting a new aesthetic he could not respect. His relationship to the nostalgia of Grieg and Tchaikovsky, and to the composers themselves, illuminates his strange journey into the new century.
