The Philosopher's Stone or The Magic Island is an opera (more precisely, a Singspiel). The libretto is by Emanuel Schikaneder.
According to entries in a Hamburg copy of the score, which was initially inaccessible after the Second World War, the music for this work by Schikaneder is said to have been written by Johann Baptist Henneberg, and it includes insert numbers by Franz Xaver Gerl, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Benedict Schack, and Schikaneder. The premiere took place on September 11, 1790, at the Wiedner Theater, and the work was also performed in a number of theaters in the German-speaking world.
After the successful premiere on September 11, 1790, the opera was performed almost continuously for another 24 years, which speaks to its immense success. The last known performance took place on February 28, 1814, in Linz.
